America is an oligarchy organized by the hierarchy of the white supremacist patriarchy. Pancake Brain is a (free) Friday newsletter dedicated to replacing the status quo with equitable public power, and a community dedicated to building the discipline of democracy that equity requires. We move through the world committed to a daily practice of activism and critical thinking. We reject limitations and embrace the possibilities of social imagination, certain that the queer future is better than anything we’ve yet dreamed up. We insist on our right and duty to the political conversation, and empower others to join us. Out of love for ourselves and the collective, we are engaged in a sustainable practice of freedom, endlessly un-fucking our brains.
This project is based on How to Start a Revolution, which I hope you will read (or listen to), if you can.
Dearest Pancake Brains,
I hope this email finds you thriving as much as possible given the current state of the dumpster fire!
I don’t have a blog post in me this week, but I still have some content to offer you.
In case you missed it, last week, I published a premature obituary for Mitch McConnell (specifically don’t knock on wood.) Check it out, if you haven’t, wishful thinking helps take the edge off impeachment.
Despite these trying times, I remain hopeful about the youth political awakening, and the immense potential this moment contains. As I wrote in my National Coming Out day piece, I’m convinced we’re in the cocoon phase of a shared glo-up. (It makes sense this shit hurts like hell.)
Despite these excruciating circumstances, I’ve found a lot of optimism in conversations about “How to Start a Revolution” with people from all different backgrounds and perspectives (including those in Canada, see: the previous newsletter).
To that end, there have been some recent interviews that have reminded me what the hell I’m doing. If you’re interested in further exploring my work and its broader implications, may I humbly suggest:
this episode of Unredacted with Emily Brandwin and Philippe Reines, which went live yesterday,
this Q&A with The Mantle by Corrie Hulse
and this Spire Magazine interview by Alanna Felton, both of which came out today.
I may leave you now until after Thanksgiving, but that will officially depend on whether or not I drink copious amounts of red wine at Thanksgiving, which can be a weird fucking day, even when there’s not a demonic sweet potato in the White House. Sending love to you all, however you end up spending Thursday, November 28th, 2019!
With earnestness and irreverence,
Lauren
